# BCG: Tech services firms can staff much of AI-led work from existing staff

> BCG’s report estimates AI-led services will add $100-200 billion of work by 2030 and that firms can staff much of it with current employees.

## Key Takeaways (TL;DR)

- AI-led services could generate $100-200 bn of new work by 2030.
- 40 Applied AI roles map to existing technology positions, enabling internal staffing.
- Hiring for new AI titles costs up to 35% more than upskilling current staff.

AI-led services are projected to add $100-200 billion of net new work by 2030, and technology services firms can staff much of it from people they already employ, according to a report released by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on Thursday, October 29 2026 [BCG report](https://www.thehindu.com/business/tech-services-firms-face-a-talent-decision-not-a-shortage-in-100-200-billion-ai-race-says-boston-consulting-group/article71641900.ece).

Sreyssha George, Managing Director and Partner at BCG and co-author of the report titled *The Talent Is Already on Your Payroll. The Clock Isn’t*, said the industry faces a “talent decision” rather than a shortage, noting that clients are shifting from hourly billing to outcome-based models.

BCG analysis identified 40 distinct Applied AI roles, each linked to an existing technology role. A data scientist or full-stack developer can grow into a forward-deployed engineer; a DevOps engineer into an AI Ops engineer; and a data engineer into a semantic engineer. Moving a data scientist into a forward-deployed engineer role takes roughly three times the upskilling effort of moving a data engineer into an AI data engineer role.

According to George, building from within also carries a cost advantage. Firms that hire against the new titles pay up to roughly 35% more than the comparable traditional role.

The report sorts the 40 roles into four groups with a distinct action each: buy the scarce anchor roles, build the scale drivers at volume, retain the delivery core, and watch the early signals. The decision that turned existing talent into supply was role architecture: a skill taxonomy, proficiency gates, bands and a dedicated job family, so that each Applied AI role has a title, a level and a band attached.

BCG also proposed five career tracks from a single role, with lateral moves between them and progression tied to demonstrated capability. It closes with five questions for leaders to answer this quarter, including whether pay bands and career paths would hold against an AI-native offer.

The findings draw on more than 2,500 AI-tagged job postings and over 50,000 professional profiles across more than 15 firms, in addition to BCG’s own proprietary skills database.

The global services market is projected to grow from roughly $1.6-1.7 trillion in 2025 to $2.2-2.4 trillion by 2030. AI-led services contribute $300-400 billion of that growth through building and running agentic solutions, work that becomes outsourceable as agentic tooling matures, and the human oversight and governance clients may not hand to a model, as per the study.
