A MIT Technology Review Insights poll shows every organization surveyed is using AI, yet fewer than one in five (16%) extract transformative value (source). The largest share (40%) report moderate gains in specific tasks or teams, 21% see meaningful gains, and 23% see minimal or no returns.
Most firms remain in pilot mode (38%) or employ AI assistants for employee support (35%). Only 12% have AI agents in production, and a mere 3% claim AI performs most work in key processes.
Prukalpa Sankar, co-founder of Atlan, attributes the gap to missing “context”: an architectural layer that translates enterprise data into machine-usable knowledge for AI models. She likens deploying AI without context to “hiring the smartest intern in the world, blindfolding them, and throwing them into your organization.”
Our read: The data suggest that without a dedicated context infrastructure, AI deployments stall at incremental improvements, leaving the majority of firms unable to justify investment costs or achieve the promised efficiency gains.
