Stripe launches Link Balance to fund autonomous AI agents
Dispatched by Tariq Al-Mansoor, Gulf & Capital Desk
- Stripe adds a funded wallet to its Link platform, allowing AI agents to spend on behalf of users within defined budgets.
- The solution uses a debit-card-to-stablecoin flow, with non-custodial storage and virtual cards for merchant checkout.
- Early agents such as Muse, Grok’s Bot and Instinct can already make purchases, and Link Balance extends this to controlled spending.
Stripe’s new Link Balance product lets users allocate dollar amounts and per-purchase caps to AI agents, enabling automated buying within preset limits.

Delegated spending gets a funded layer
Stripe announced Link Balance, a feature that adds a funded source to its existing Link Agent Wallet. Users can allocate a specific dollar amount and set a per-purchase ceiling before an AI agent begins buying. The product aims to make instructions like “buy this item if the price falls below $90” executable without real-time user approval, as described in the launch note Fintech Wrap Up.
Existing wallet infrastructure
Link already provides a consumer wallet that stores cards and bank accounts for reuse across supported checkouts. In April 2026 Stripe extended this wallet to agents, allowing them to generate one-time cards or Shared Payment Tokens backed by saved payment methods. Agents such as Muse, Grok’s Bot and Instinct can already complete purchases without accessing the underlying card details.
Funding flow and merchant settlement
The new balance is funded via a debit card, then converted by Stripe Crypto Onramp into a dollar-denominated stablecoin on the Tempo network. Funds reside in a non-custodial wallet powered by Privy, while the user sees a dollar-based balance. Stripe Issuing issues a virtual debit card linked to this balance; the agent uses the card in standard checkout flows, letting merchants receive traditional card payments without stablecoin support.
Our read: Link Balance offers a concrete, low-friction path for B2B firms to embed AI-driven purchasing into existing payment ecosystems, but the split between financial limits and product-selection judgment remains a risk that will need complementary controls.
Stripe’s Link Balance bridges consumer wallets and autonomous agents, offering a practical mechanism for delegated spending. The design balances ease of purchase with clear budgetary controls, though it does not address non-financial decision risks.
