Hybrid Reasoning Agents Cut Tokens and Boost LLM Performance
Filed by Marcus Reed, Open Source & Code Scout
- Hybrid Reasoning Agents combine internal latent reasoning with external text interaction.
- They achieve up to 54.7% token reduction and 2.6× faster inference across 11 benchmarks.
- Code and data are released publicly on GitHub.
HybridAgents let large language models think in latent space and act via text, trimming costs and speeding inference.

A new architecture called Hybrid Reasoning Agents (HybridAgents) was presented in a paper on Hugging Face Daily Papers, showing that LLMs can alternate between latent internal reasoning and text-based external actions via a lightweight HybridLink component link. The design preserves tool-integrated capabilities while making latent thoughts inspectable, and it is supported by two post-training methods: HybridSFT for stabilizing tool use and HybridRL for learning when to think versus act.
Evaluations across three model scales and eleven benchmarks—including mathematics, science, medicine, search, and agentic reasoning—report a consistent 10.4% performance gain over leading text-only and latent agents. Token usage drops by 35.5%–54.7%, inference speed improves 1.8×–2.6×, and cost savings reach 2.7×–3.7×. The authors have open-sourced the implementation at https://github.com/togethercomputer/HybridAgent.
Our read: The hybrid approach directly addresses the inefficiency of token-by-token “think-aloud” loops in current agents, offering a practical path for developers to retrofit existing LLMs with lower latency and operating costs while retaining tool access.
