The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has given final approval to Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB), allowing the crypto firm to run a federally supervised bank, according to Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse’s post on X and reported by CoinDesk. The bank will manage the reserves backing Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin and provide regulated custody services for institutional clients, while RLUSD issuance remains with Ripple’s New York-regulated unit, Standard Custody & Trust Company.
RLUSD, launched in December 2024, has reached a market value of roughly $2.5 billion and is backed by U.S. dollar deposits, government securities and other cash-like assets held largely by BNY.
Garlinghouse said the approval validates his long-standing view that crypto and banks work better together, and that the national trust charter strengthens Ripple’s foundation for institutional products across payments, custody and capital markets.
Our read: The OCC’s green light gives Ripple a hybrid banking-crypto model that could lower compliance friction for large enterprises, while the dual state-federal oversight may set a template for future stablecoin issuers seeking deeper integration with the regulated financial system.
