Abu Dhabi has introduced a real-time AI system, Exposure AI, to map pedestrians’ exposure to traffic-related air pollution as they move through the city, according to a report by the Khaleej Times source. The tool, developed jointly by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and MIT’s Senseable City Lab, complements Emission AI, which uses dash-cam video to estimate emissions from individual vehicles.
Together the systems replace reliance on fixed monitoring stations by connecting vehicle emissions directly to the air that people actually inhale, allowing planners to pinpoint which roads, traffic flows and vehicle types drive the highest exposure. The underlying research was published in Communications Engineering (Sept 2026) and Nature Sustainability (Apr 2026), with DMT acknowledged as a consortium supporter.
A renewed agreement signed at LIVEX 2026 by DMT Acting Executive Director Fatema Al Mutawa and MIT director Carlo Ratti launches further AI-driven projects—Trees in My Backyard, Re-Leaf, and Stellar Oasis—aimed at guiding tree planting in high-heat, high-pollution zones and reducing light pollution across the emirate.
