VMware announced vSphere Express, a new entry-level virtualization tier targeting small- to medium-sized businesses that want “cost-effective essential virtualization” Ars Technica.
IT distributor TD Synnex lists the service at $9,600 per year for up to 128 cores, with no price reduction for smaller deployments, a point noted as a hurdle for the tiniest use cases. The license is sold as a per-core subscription and is said to be “significantly lower” than the VVF and VCF bundles, though VMware did not disclose exact pricing.
vSphere Express provides basic features such as vMotion for live VM migration and high-availability automatic restarts. It supports only discrete instances and lacks central management, according to VP of product marketing Prashanth Shenoy. Unlike vSphere Standard, which has seen few updates, Express will receive updates as often as VCF and VVF, according to The Register.
Our read: VMware is attempting to regain SMB trust by re-introducing a stripped-down, lower-priced tier, but the flat-rate pricing and limited management may still leave the smallest firms underserved.
